St. Michael's Catholic Church holds a rich history that reflects the enduring faith of its community. Originally established in 1909 in Cheney, Nebraska, the church began as a modest wooden structure, built with the support of the Catholic Church Extension Society. Over the years, it served as a mission parish for nearly 90 years, providing a spiritual home for countless families. The church celebrated its centennial in 2009, marking a century of devotion and service. While the original building was eventually retired, its legacy lives on in the hearts of parishioners and the vibrant community it fostered
St. Michael’s Church stood for centuries, its bells tolling through war and peace. Legend says that when a fire ravaged the town in 1909, the church remained untouched, guarded by a radiant figure atop the bell tower. A century later, workers uncovered a hidden manuscript beneath the altar—a prayer for protection, written the day before the fire. Coincidence or divine intervention? Even now, visitors come to see the manuscript and pray before the beloved, beautiful altar believing St. Michael’s is still watched over by unseen hands.
